Ten minutes with Rachel

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to adaptability, determination, resilience, and the willingness to embrace new opportunities throughout my career. My journey has taken me through different industries, beginning with my passion for culinary arts, where I earned my degree, completed an internship at the Sheridan Hotel, and built my skills from preparation roles to kitchen management. Those experiences taught me the importance of teamwork, organization, leadership, and creating positive experiences for others. At a young age, I faced a significant medical challenge that tested my strength and perseverance, but overcoming that experience gave me a deeper appreciation for resilience, gratitude, and the ability to move forward through adversity. When my path shifted away from culinary arts, I embraced an unexpected opportunity in transportation and discovered a new passion for serving others. Through hard work, continuous learning, and a commitment to supporting my team, I progressed from a CDL driver to a leadership role where I manage daily operations, coordinate transportation services, and help create a positive work environment. I believe my success comes from treating people with respect, staying open to change, and recognizing that strong teams are built by supporting every individual and working together toward a shared goal.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to stay true to myself, continue learning, and never underestimate the value of hard work and perseverance. My parents have been my greatest influences, at an young age, teaching me the importance of dedication, humility, and giving my best effort in everything I do. Their example has shaped the way I approach both my career and personal life. I have also been inspired by my husband, children, mentors, and the many people who have encouraged me to keep growing and pursuing new opportunities. I believe that success is not only measured by achievements but also by the relationships we build, the lessons we learn, and the positive impact we have on others. I continue to find inspiration in individuals who demonstrate authenticity, resilience, and purpose, and I strive to bring those same qualities into my leadership, my work, and the way I serve my team and community.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the transportation industry is to recognize their own value, believe in their abilities, and never be afraid to pursue opportunities for growth. Hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn can open doors to new possibilities, so I encourage others to continue investing in their education and personal development throughout their careers. Success does not always follow a straight path, and unexpected changes can often lead to some of the most rewarding opportunities. It is important to be adaptable, take care of yourself, and have the confidence to step outside your comfort zone. My own journey from culinary arts to transportation leadership has taught me that resilience, determination, and embracing change can lead to meaningful success. I hope to inspire other women to trust their journey, pursue their goals, and recognize the impact they can make in their industry and community.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the transportation industry is managing the many moving parts required to keep daily operations running efficiently while ensuring the safety and reliability of student transportation services. Each day brings unique challenges, from driver absences and schedule adjustments to unexpected delays and emergencies, requiring strong communication, organization, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. In my role as Assistant Terminal Manager, I have the opportunity to support my team, improve operational processes, and help create a workplace where everyone feels valued and supported. Through effective planning and the use of transportation management systems such as Traversa and Bytecurve, I help coordinate schedules, optimize resources, support dispatch operations, and maintain strong partnerships with school district administrators. I believe these challenges also create opportunities for growth, innovation, and leadership development. My own journey from culinary arts to transportation has taught me the importance of adaptability and embracing new opportunities, and I continue to invest in my professional growth through ongoing education and skill development. Ultimately, the greatest opportunity in this field is the ability to make a meaningful impact by ensuring students arrive safely, supporting my team, and contributing to a community-focused organization built on trust, dedication, and service.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are hard work, responsibility, kindness, perseverance, and faith. These values were instilled in me by my parents, who taught me that meaningful accomplishments come from dedication, effort, and never giving up when challenges arise. My family is my greatest source of strength, and the support of my husband, children, and loved ones has encouraged me throughout every stage of my journey. My faith also plays an important role in guiding me, reminding me to approach challenges with compassion, hope, and a positive mindset. As a leader, I believe in supporting others, treating people with respect, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued. I strive to be a role model for my children and those around me by showing that kindness, resilience, and a willingness to help others can make a lasting impact. Whether I am supporting my team, encouraging a colleague, or guiding my family, I believe even the smallest acts of kindness can create meaningful change.
