Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received is a mantra I always tell myself: the worst that can happen is they say no. I have to keep reminding myself that nothing bad is going to happen. I either get the job or I don't. This mindset helps me break through my salesperson head, because I don't love salesy sales, but I love doing what I'm doing. So if I can just get somebody's trust, I'm good. When I have to put on my salesperson hat, I basically remind myself that the worst that can happen is they say no. This could obviously translate into many fields, but it helps me take action without fear of rejection.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Number one, it's not really as easy as everybody wants to make it out to be. Be true to yourselves and know that the time you put in is the amount you're going to get out of it. Are you looking to achieve a certain dollar amount as far as your income or your sales? Be realistic. Don't beat yourself up if you lose one or two or ten clients, because you will. Just continue to constantly educate yourself and be in the know with what's going on in the industry. The vast majority of people that get into it don't do a lot, so understand what you're committing to and put in the real effort required.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think it will be interesting to see how AI continues to integrate into our industry. Are we replaceable like a lot of other industries are starting to question or feel? Obviously, pieces of it are. I'm old enough to be very wary of all that kind of stuff, so I'm probably not grabbing all of the tools that are promoted for us in the AI arena. I also think these big conglomerates are taking over. Zillow's taken over some of our showing systems, and it becomes a little monolithic. I don't like that some company has a stranglehold on a lot of other things that we do. We've also had challenges with our commission structure that most of the population just doesn't really understand, even now. I think it's our job, with education and transparency, to be completely upfront about how it works.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Obviously, honesty and integrity, transparency. I won't compromise those values. If it means the difference between me getting the job, I'm not going to say something that I don't necessarily believe. Just treating people fairly. Everybody deserves to be treated the way that we all should be treated. I operate with these values even though I am in an industry that I question sometimes, you know, how other people are operating. But I won't compromise on honesty, integrity, and transparency no matter what.
