About Rachel

Rachel Torres serves as Senior System Engineer at General Mills, where she has worked for four years after advancing from a system engineer role. With about 10 years in manufacturing, her career began in the meat processing industry, starting with microbiology testing in a lab and progressing to quality technician and process supervision roles in a tannery. She later joined Nutrien as a utilities engineer overseeing steam and cooling water systems before moving to General Mills. Rachel holds a Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Engineering, a leather technician certification, and high-pressure boiler certifications, and she is currently enrolled in a Dale Carnegie class. She takes pride in her early involvement piloting a data historian tool that expanded across North American sites and beyond. Rachel attributes her success to persistence and self-compassion during challenges, values flexibility, autonomy, trust, and integrity, and sees opportunities in manufacturing through AI adoption while noting the field's enduring necessity.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never giving up and giving myself grace during the hard times. I realize that it's not always going to be hard, and it's okay to take it one step at a time when going through challenges.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

To never give up, and to sometimes treat learning like you're learning to swim and just dive into the deep end.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

For manufacturing, challenges include supply continuity and dealing with short-notice shortages by being flexible and knowing resources. Opportunities include adopting AI while recognizing that manufacturing roles won't be easily replaced by artificial intelligence and will continue to be necessary and valuable.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Flexibility and autonomy, trust, and integrity are most important to me.
