Her Story

About Rachel

Rachel Trudell, LCSW, is a Clinical Social Work/Therapist who operates a private practice in Almond, New York. She began her career in 1999 at a halfway house, where she supported individuals experiencing mental illness and substance use challenges. She later served as a family case manager and adult and children case manager with Clarity Wellness Community ARA, providing support to children, adults, and families with complex behavioral health needs.

Throughout her career, Rachel has built extensive experience in mental health counseling, case management, clinical supervision, home-based services, policy development, and regulatory compliance. In 2008, while working full time and raising a family, she earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Empire State College and continued her education through social work school, commuting to Rochester for classes and internships. Following 25 years at a prior facility, where she worked with OMH regulations, developed policies, supervised clinical staff, and supported home-based mental health services, she transitioned to private practice to create greater flexibility while continuing to serve her community.

Rachel's clinical approach is grounded in meeting clients where they are and creating a supportive environment that recognizes each individual's strengths, experiences, and needs. She incorporates trauma-informed and humanistic approaches while helping clients navigate emotional distress, life transitions, self-sabotaging behaviors, substance use, and other mental health challenges. Her professional interests include supporting adults, children, adolescents, and families, and she remains actively engaged in community initiatives, including the TIC Tech community, Suicide Prevention Coalition, and R Core improvement project. Through her practice, Rachel combines clinical expertise, advocacy, compassion, and practical problem-solving to help clients build healthier and more empowered lives.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rachel

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, continuous growth, and a genuine commitment to helping others. Throughout my career, I have embraced challenges as opportunities to learn, remained dedicated to my education and professional development, and refused to let others’ doubts define what I could achieve. I believe in seeing the whole person, staying connected to the work, and continuing forward even when the path is difficult. Most importantly, my passion for making a meaningful difference in people’s lives has kept me motivated throughout every stage of my journey.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was to believe in myself and recognize that my voice and experience have value. Mentors and family members encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, speak up, and trust my abilities. Their support taught me that I do not have to navigate every challenge alone and that believing in my own potential is essential to growth. I carry that lesson with me by continuing to advocate, lead, mentor others, and pursue opportunities that allow me to make a meaningful difference.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering counseling or social work is to build a strong foundation through case management, which provides valuable insight into people’s real-life circumstances and the challenges that shape their well-being. Be willing to listen, advocate, meet people where they are, and remember that the work is about relationships as much as clinical skills. Do not let regulations, documentation, or difficult interactions discourage you. Stay compassionate, protect your own well-being, and remember that you cannot control someone else’s journey—you can only provide consistency, support, and guidance while continuing to show up.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The mental health field faces significant challenges, including regulations, insurance requirements, credentialing, and administrative barriers that can sometimes limit access to care. At the same time, there are tremendous opportunities to make services more flexible and responsive to individual needs. I believe we must continue finding ways to balance ethical standards with approaches that allow professionals to meet people where they are. Expanding home-based services and improving insurance credentialing for private practitioners could make care more accessible and help qualified professionals serve their communities more effectively. Ultimately, the greatest opportunity is to continue evolving a system that puts people first and recognizes that meaningful mental health care may look different for everyone.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are compassion, respect, connection, consistency, and service. I believe every person has strengths and deserves to be heard, understood, and treated with dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances. In my work, I focus on helping people recognize their own abilities and develop the confidence to navigate challenges rather than simply solving problems for them. My family also taught me that compassion is demonstrated through action—being present, helping when someone is struggling, and making yourself available to others. I strive to carry those values into both my professional work and personal life by consistently showing up with empathy, respect, and genuine care.
