Her Story
About Rachel
Rachel Vinson, M.S., is an accomplished sports and recreation professional with more than 15 years of experience leading community-focused facilities, programs, and teams. She began her career at the YMCA at just 18 years old and steadily advanced through the organization, taking on roles in youth sports, operations, membership development, and executive leadership. During her YMCA career, Rachel earned recognition as Director of the Year from the Association of YMCA Professionals for her dedication to operational excellence, team development, and community impact. She later expanded her expertise through parks and recreation leadership before bringing her experience in athletics, facility management, and community programming to The Sports Facilities Companies. As General Manager of the Burlington Pickleball Complex in Burlington, North Carolina, Rachel oversees the operations of a 17-court championship pickleball facility, managing everything from staffing and budgeting to marketing, partnerships, programming, tournaments, and daily venue performance. Since taking on the role, she has helped successfully launch the facility and establish it as a growing destination for players, families, community members, and national tournaments. While Rachel’s background is rooted broadly in sports rather than pickleball specifically, she has embraced the opportunity to learn the sport, understand its unique culture, and build programming that connects with players of all experience levels. She stays engaged with industry trends through professional networks, newsletters, and collaboration with colleagues across The Sports Facilities Companies’ growing portfolio of venues. Rachel’s leadership philosophy centers on confidence, hard work, relationships, and creating meaningful community experiences through sports. She credits much of her professional growth to mentors who encouraged her to believe in her abilities and pursue opportunities beyond what she initially thought possible. Passionate about developing people and strengthening communities, Rachel continues to focus on expanding access to sports, building partnerships, and creating memorable experiences for athletes and families. With major tournament opportunities on the horizon, she is excited to help bring increased visibility, economic impact, and continued growth to the Burlington region.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Rachel
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith and a powerful combination of personal drive and the invaluable support of a graduate-school professor who truly believed in my potential. By pairing that foundational encouragement with relentless hard work, strategic team building, and strong professional connections, I have been able to successfully drive community engagement—most notably demonstrated through the successful opening and continuous growth of the Burlington Pickleball Complex.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Live by the four P’s: Patience, Perseverance, Purpose, Passion. If you master those four things, you’ll have no choice but to be successful.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My primary advice to young women entering this industry is to deeply believe in yourself, remain entirely willing to put in the hard work, and intentionally cultivate strong professional connections. Building a successful career requires a foundation of confidence and effort; when you trust your capabilities and pair that with a dedicated work ethic, doors will open for you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Operating in this space presents a unique balance of logistical hurdles and historic growth, as we navigate the challenges of weather-dependent outdoor venue construction and managing robust community programming with a small staff. However, these challenges are closely tied to massive opportunities driven by the booming popularity of pickleball, allowing us to leverage rapid company expansion—scaling from roughly 54 to over 140 venues in 18 months—to foster vibrant community growth and create clear pathways for career advancement.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The core values that anchor both my professional career and my personal life are unwavering self-belief, a dedicated work ethic, active community engagement, and the cultivation of meaningful connections. Living by these principles allows me to stay grounded while fostering impactful relationships and building spaces that bring people together.
