She has learned that knowledge is power and that people do not know what they do not know, which helps with keeping things confidential and not oversharing. She advises young women entering the field of marketing or hospitality that it is a very diverse field, so they should not get discouraged in the beginning, explore many different positions including managerial roles, and be passionate about the industry. She notes the travel industry in California has seen a slowdown this year.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rachelle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say just a lot of ambition, and you know, always picking myself back up after getting knocked down, just keep trying, and just, you know, when things like that happen, just moving on to the next opportunity, and yeah, just being very ambitious and driven is what has got me where I am, I think.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I've learned that knowledge is power, and that people don't know what they don't know. I felt like that was always very helpful, as far as, like, keeping, you know, things that are confidential, confidential, or, like, not oversharing.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that it's a very diverse field. So don't get discouraged, in the beginning if it seems like it's not the right fit for you. There are so many different positions in this field that you could try out, or look into, and still get the taste of, you know, hospitality work, but maybe not you know, working at the front desk, or working, you know, in housekeeping, something like that. You can totally do, you know, more managerial roles, which I don't think people know much about. ... Don't get discouraged in the beginning. It does take a special person to work in this industry also, so I would say you have to really be passionate about it, too.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say the travel industry seems to be slowing down a bit this year. Not sure why. It could be for political reasons, economic reasons, but just in general. our area is usually really, really busy every summer, and it wasn't as busy as it normally is this summer, so I'm not sure. Definitely seeing a little slowdown in the travel industry this year, at least in California.
