Her Story

About Ragnhild

Ragnhild Bruland serves as co-founder and board member of a nonprofit she launched in 2014, focused on providing free dance mentoring sessions to youth in and out of juvenile detention centers. She partners with the Administration of Children's Services to deliver programming at foster care facilities and other sites, while also conducting community-based work in schools and centers. With a PhD in psychology from The New School and a master's in clinical psychology from the same institution, she integrates research, program evaluation, and her background in dance and musical theater to support healing and personal development through movement. Bruland began her work in psychology and dance prior to founding the nonprofit and attributes her success to persistence, hard work, and not giving up despite challenges. She values showing up as her authentic self, managing emotions, and striving to be the best version of herself, particularly as a mother setting an example for her son. In her role, she handles outreach, meetings, events, and team coordination, while navigating cash flow issues common to nonprofits, especially since COVID, with a small team of artists.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ragnhild

01What do you attribute your success to?

Persistence and hard work. Not giving up even though it gets hard. Sometimes it takes longer than you expect but just keep going at it and keep trying and finding other loopholes or pathways.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Follow your heart because work can be so tedious and if you don't like what you do it's just gonna really bring you down so you have to have a passion for it because it gets you through the rough days.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Cash flow issues with contracts and grants having payment gaps. Navigating timing with a small team mostly of artists. Constraints in funding areas since COVID.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Showing up and being your authentic self. Managing emotions and striving to become the best version of yourself, especially as a mom setting an example for my son.
