Her Story

About Rana

Rana Ghiassi is an Iranian director and writer with a specialty in film. She went to school for screenwriting and soon after began making films with friends. These projects toured the festival circuit and received positive recognition, sparking an obsession with the craft. She is currently in the development stage of her first feature film. Ghiassi attributes her success to the ambition she held at a young age and the drive to honor that younger self by pursuing her goals wholeheartedly. She finds joy in the collaborative process of filmmaking, bringing together passionate individuals to build stories and create a sense of family on set. Outside of her professional work, she supports Women in Film and the Farhang Foundation.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rana

01What do you attribute your success to?

I feel like I was so ambitious really young, and I was like, I'm gonna do this. The thing that really pushes me and drives me is the younger me being so leaping without thinking. I'm like, I have to owe the younger me to actually pull it off. It brings me such a sense of joy to make a film, bring so many people together, write it, curate it. It's like you're all making a baby together. There's such a level of passion in everybody on a film set. The family aspect of building stories, telling important inspiring ones, and the group family aspect where everyone misses each other after a project.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you really feel it in your heart and feel called to do it, do it wholeheartedly and 100%, put all your eggs in that basket, don't focus on so many different things or a Plan B. You have to be sort of delusional enough to really pursue it, actually letting go and taking that leap. As women, we're notorious for talking ourselves out of good ideas.
