Her Story
About Rana
I came to a point where I was just super burnt out in accounting, and I knew there was a purpose in me that I was not serving when it came to the accounting field. I appreciated working for it and I learned so much, but there was a fulfillment inside of me that I could not release and could not give to the community. As the person that I am, I love helping people, I love making a difference, I love seeing people improve in their lives and make it better for them. My love for biology and anatomy was always ingrained in me, and I thought, I need to express it. When I was exploring all of that, I came across physical therapy, and I saw how much it was hands-on, changing people's lives - patients walking in with a walker that can now walk without an assisted device. That was an eye-opener for me. As a single mom, I took a leap of faith and decided to explore it. I balanced my work schedule, went back to school after that many years, worked late nights doing all my accounting work past midnight, went to school during the day, and took care of my kid in between. I completed my program, sat for my board's exam, passed it, and now I'm working in therapy since 2023. I see close to 20 patients a day in back-to-back 30-minute slots. I am the exercise lead in the clinic, so I manage the schedule, manage team leadership meetings, do coaching, schedule training sessions if some therapists need help on remembering certain exercises or anatomy, and I communicate directly with the clinic director for work-related matters, billing units, and how our operations are being handled in the clinic. I'm really happy that I was able to, in a very short period of time, become the exercise lead. When I was offered to be the exercise lead, we were not in a position within the company where we were hitting our goals or meeting our goals. I feel like supplementing my business background helped us now achieve these goals. We are in a better ranking in the company and we've been very consistent with hitting our goals every week, which is a remarkable comeback for the clinic itself, and it pushed the clinic up in a higher ranking within its multiple locations.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say don't be afraid. There's gonna be that hesitation, the fear of feeling like, if I exit out of here, I might fail, and because of the might fail that's in your head is what's gonna stop you. But if you break through that and you decide, you know what, no, I'm gonna break that barrier and I'm gonna try it, because if you never try, you will never know. If I had stopped myself because of fear of, like, no, what if I fail, I would not be here. Just break out of the fear. If you have a hesitation, don't be afraid. You have to try. You have to. There's no other way to do it. You just gotta do it. I supplemented my business background with my therapy work, which helped us achieve our goals. We are in a better ranking in the company and we've been very consistent with hitting our goals every week, which is a remarkable comeback for the clinic itself. It fed the missing part in me, and that mattered more. I'm happier, I enjoy my time, I leave work, I can't wait to see my kid. I'm not carrying that stress of work that I take it home and I'm drained. I absolutely love it.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
A specific client told me, you know what, you came from Lebanon, you should be looking into getting a degree in accounting. You're already working in a CPA firm, why not pursue a degree in it? I never was motivated for it, but I took his advice and I thought, you know what, I should probably look into it. He knows what he's talking about, considering he's this business guy and he's very well established. And I did, and that's really what motivated me to go into accounting and decide it is a secure degree, a secure job that you can get from.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say don't be afraid. Don't be afraid, because there's gonna be that hesitation, the fear of feeling like, if I exit out of here, I might fail, and because of the might fail that's in your head is what's gonna stop you. But if you break through that and you decide, you know what, no, I'm gonna break that barrier and I'm gonna try it, because if you never try, you will never know. If I had stopped myself because of fear of, like, no, what if I fail, I would not be here. I really, in my heart, hope I can inspire someone that feels like, this is it for me, that's all I know. No. That wasn't me, too. That's all I knew was accounting, and going back to school and learning all anatomy and everything else, that's a huge career change there between anatomy and business. It has nothing to do with it. But you know what, I'll tell you something, it's supplemented where I'm at in my job position right now. I did not waste my time in accounting, even though I felt trapped at one point, but I can say I'm grateful that I can supplement it in my new field. So it's never a loss. Just break out of the fear. If you have a hesitation, don't be afraid. You have to try. You have to. There's no other way to do it. You just gotta do it.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
As the person that I am, I love helping people, I love making a difference, I love seeing people improve in their lives and make it better for them. There was a fulfillment inside of me that I could not release and could not give to the community in accounting. When I discovered physical therapy and saw patients walking in with a walker that can now walk without an assisted device, that was an eye-opener for me. It fed the missing part in me, and that mattered more than the pay cut I took. I'm happier now. I enjoy my time, I leave work, I can't wait to see my kid. I'm not carrying that stress of work that I take it home and I'm drained. Because I'm in a setting where I can express myself, I'm tired when I'm working 20 patients a day, but guess what? I absolutely love it. And I go home, I'm happy. I can't wait to share with my kid what I worked with today. The positivity, a patient was happy that they're able to walk today, or no longer need a crutch, or whatever. That, to me, is all worth it.
