Her Story

About Randi

I started my career in public health and really fell in love with the community-based approach, thinking I would spend most of my career there. However, early on I hit a ceiling pretty quickly, so I moved over into process improvement and project management, getting certified in project management and earning my Lean Six Sigma yellow and green belts. Recognizing the challenges of healthcare, I saw an opportunity to combine those two skill sets. I moved to a national healthcare company, working directly with providers in their offices, teaching and working with them on proper clinical documentation, coding, workflows, and support. I then moved to a sister company within this national company and served the West region covering about 2 million Medicare Advantage members, from Minnesota down to Hawaii. I worked on various aspects of Medicare Advantage, including quality, member experience, growth, benefits design, engagement, and worked with local networks and provider groups. I then moved over to Providence Health Plan, where I've been for about 5 years in a variety of roles. Currently, as Chief Healthcare Experience and Population Health Officer, my division focuses on quality and experience for our 450,000 members in the Northwest market. We work with members, providers, and the healthcare community to ensure members are getting screenings like breast cancer screenings, that our diabetic members are taken care of appropriately with all their screenings and medications. My team is also responsible for provider credentialing and patient safety, ensuring doctors have been vetted and are up to standard for high-quality care. I also oversee risk adjustment, which contributes to close to a billion dollars for the health plan, as well as member experience, looking at end-to-end aspects of healthcare member experience. Finally, I have a Strategic Accounts team that works boots on the ground directly inside provider offices on things like increased workflows to drive performance.

Ten minutes with Randi

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've learned that relationships and networking are everything, not only when we're talking about career advancement, but also when it comes to community connections and relationships. I have been the recipient of this incredible support of women who have spearheaded, who've shattered glass ceilings, and who have really created the path and pulled me along. One example is that I was part of the Class of 2025 Carol Emmett Fellowship, which is for exceptional healthcare leaders to create better diversity and equity in C-suite leadership. I was able to be part of the program because I had a leader who was part of the program, who had a leader who was part of the program. So I would say my favorite part is having those relationships, but most importantly, creating opportunities for others to really thrive in their careers.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just keep saying yes. I think we get into a mindset that there's one quote-unquote right path, or there's one quote-unquote right decision, but what I've learned is there's not. Every choice we make is simply a choice, and whether we make a choice and we try a new facet of our job, or we try a new position, or perhaps we enter into another industry, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves that, what if this isn't quote-unquote right? But no matter what, there's deep lessons, there's skills to be learned, and there's experience that will serve you well no matter where you go. So say yes, don't overthink it, try things, explore, and continue to learn.
