Her Interview
Ten minutes with Randi
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my professional success to hard work, resilience, and drive to keep learning and improving. I lead with purpose, build strong relationships, and advocate for the teams I lead, the patients they care for, and the field of respiratory therapy.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Three things come to mind when I think about career advice.
- While it is important to keep financial stewardship in mind, it is imperative that decisions are made prioritizing patient care first.
- You are only as good as the people that work under you. It is important to recognize their hard work, dedication, and prioritize their needs.
- No today, doesn't mean no forever. Continue to stay focused on your goals and work to your fullest potential.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering respiratory therapy is to embrace this rewarding career and recognize the meaningful impact you can make. Not every day will you be able to save a life and end the day with happiness. Recognizing your positive impact on someone's life even during their last breath is important. And lastly, always talk to your patients, introducing yourself and explaining what you will be doing, even when they are sedated.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my career is knowing there are not enough respiratory therapy students enrolled in programs to fill the number of vacant positions across the nation. This is where I flex the opportunity to be involved in the NJSRC and on the advisory boards for the Respiratory Therapy Programs in NJ.
There is also a tremendous opportunity in respiratory therapy and in healthcare in general right now, to identify patients affected by social determinants of health and connect them with resources they need to achieve and maintain better health. This includes assisting them with access to food, transportation, medications, health care, and other resources that can remove barriers to care and ultimately improve health outcomes.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value honesty and transparency in both my work and personal life. I also feel it is important to take accountability for decisions and outcomes. Be present and dependable and always advocate for your patients, staff, profession, and family.
I am a mom of 3 (Erin 17, Mason 15, and Brett 12) and a wife to Randy (yes, we have the same name!)
