About Rebecca

Rebecca Alford serves as a Principal Scientist at Johnson and Johnson, a role she has held for four years. Shaw Research, a biotech specializing in long-time scale molecular dynamics. Alford earned her PhD at Johns Hopkins in molecular simulations and design and her bachelor's in chemistry with a concentration in computational chemistry from Carnegie Mellon. In her work, she employs computer simulations and artificial intelligence to design new molecules and accelerate the drug discovery process, collaborating with partners to test candidates in the wet lab. 01What do you attribute your success to?

I don't think it's one thing. I think perseverance, my family being supportive and giving me the foundation to grow, the right environment to grow and pursue my passion.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Only focus on the things that you're an expert in. As a working mom, you cannot do everything. You have to pick the things where you can make the biggest and most important impact.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's really important to be persistent and not give up. Drug discovery is such a long game, but it is important to be persistent, because that's ultimately how we make progress and how we make things better.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Lack of data. Getting experimental data is really expensive and time consuming, and they're just not at the scale yet that AI needs to learn. Organizations are focused on building up the data that we need for AI to really empower us.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

We're all here to do what's best for the patients. Doing it in a collaborative way that's also scientifically rigorous is really important.
