Her Story
About Rebecca
I am a Construction Accounting Manager with a deep-rooted connection to the construction industry. I grew up watching my dad and grandfather run their contracting business, which gave me an early appreciation for this field. I've always had a love for numbers, and about 3 years ago, those two passions came together perfectly in my current role. Over my 10-year accounting career, I've worked across different industries including hospitality and manufacturing, but construction accounting has always been what I enjoyed the most because it's a little bit different from general accounting. My primary responsibility is revenue management, where I track all of our active projects to make sure they're within budget, and if they're not, I determine why and what we need to do on the accounting end to account for them. I also conduct month-end reviews, going through our project lists to ensure revenue is being recorded correctly per all our guidelines. What I love most about my work is that it has direct meaning - I tell people at the end of the day how much money they get to make, and that's impactful because leaders can make business decisions based on that information. I recently achieved my CCIFP certification in March after studying for about a year, which has been a huge career achievement for me.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say it's genuine passion for what I do. I know accounting can be so monotonous, and people either love it or hate it, but I genuinely enjoy what I do. I enjoy that my work means something to management. Again, revenue management - I tell the people at the end of the day how much money you get to make, and that's impactful, and you can make decisions based off that. So I like that my work has direct meaning, and can help other leaders make business decisions.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Construction can be a tough industry in general, not just accounting, but across all of the fields, but it can also be the most rewarding. You develop a relationship with the people that you work with, and it does end up turning into a family, because you spend so much time and spend so much time communicating that, you know, although it has its challenges, it can be just as rewarding.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges is that construction accounting specifically is very nuanced. So, getting started early is advantageous, because a lot of the times, those positions hiring want experience in it, because it is so different than generalized other accounting. But with that being said, once you get that set of skills and that experience, it's such a particular set of skills that it can really take you far, because you have that special experience that not a lot of other people in the accounting field have, or get to experience. So I think it can make you kind of like a needle in a haystack, as you progress in your career.
