About Rebecca

Rebecca Laws serves as an ESL Tutor and Educator at Harry S. Truman College, a community college within the City Colleges of Chicago system, where she has been teaching for approximately two years. Her professional background is grounded in communications and media studies, which she incorporates into her instructional approach to foster effective communication, student engagement, and a supportive classroom environment. Before entering her current role, Ms. Laws gained valuable experience through volunteer tutoring during her school and college years, an experience that inspired her to pursue a career in English language education and support learners from diverse backgrounds. Ms. Laws is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration (MPA) at DePaul University, with her academic experience including participation in the Chaddick Institute, where she engages in community-based initiatives related to transportation and public policy. Her education and professional development reflect a broader interest in public service, community engagement, communications, and education. She draws significant inspiration from her family, particularly her mother, who worked as a teacher, and her aunt, who served with the Department of Labor in an educational capacity. Their commitment to education and service has helped shape Rebecca s' own dedication to helping others learn, grow, and succeed. Ms. Laws believes aspiring educators should remain committed to continuous learning while developing a strong classroom presence and meaningful relationships with their students. She encourages those entering the profession to absorb as much knowledge as possible, establish trust and rapport with learners, and remain adaptable when working with diverse immigrant populations and varying educational needs. Her approach emphasizes communication, inclusivity, cultural awareness, adaptability, and student-centered instruction, allowing her to create an environment where learners feel respected, supported, and empowered to develop their skills. Through her work as an ESL educator and her continued studies in public administration, Ms. Laws is building a career focused on education, community service, and positive social impact.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rebecca

01What do you attribute your success to?

"I attribute my success to having a strong foundation and role models that I can look up to for advice. My mother was a teacher and my aunt was instrumental in education, working for the Department of Labor. Seeing them go through school and college and do wonderful things in society inspired me to keep going and has kept me grounded".

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

"I would tell a woman newly going into education to try to absorb as much as you can because at first it can seem overwhelming. You have to do the background work first before really helping other people. Learn teaching mechanisms, establish yourself in the classroom, and build rapport with students. Be prepared and do not get discouraged because your personal ideas of what should happen may not match reality, and you have to collaborate with others. Especially with the immigrant population from various backgrounds and learning levels, you have to navigate that without getting discouraged, find a middle ground for an inclusive environment, and meet students where they are".
