About Rebecca

Rebecca Payne is a psychologist in private practice who has been working independently since graduating with her doctorate in 2022. She earned her undergraduate degree from Hampshire College in 2011, where she designed her own major in psychology, psychoanalysis, and international criminal justice, and later completed her doctorate in clinical psychology with a concentration in forensics at William James College in Boston after entering the program in 2017. Prior to her current role, Payne worked as a top fundraiser for Save the Children, in artist relations for her family's guitar string company, and briefly in a news control room. Her professional focus includes forensic psychology and supporting clients with borderline personality disorder, and she maintains memberships in the American Psychological Association, the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, and the American Psychology-Law Society. Payne sponsors children through Save the Children and sees pro bono patients. She attributes her success to stubbornness and an ability to push through challenges, values kindness and respect for all people, and advises others to love what they do while prioritizing self-care to avoid burnout. She recently started the podcast Psychology of Success.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rebecca

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute it to stubbornness, or just an ability to push through when things are really hard. I just seemed like, no, I'm gonna get through this. I refuse to not finish this.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. The biggest one is to just pick something that you love doing.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure to always practice what you preach and put your own mask on first. Take care of yourself because this industry can cause burnout. Don't let the tragedies of the world consume you.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The challenge is figuring out where AI fits in, but it won't take over the role of a psychologist because fostering a human relationship is critical. The opportunity is using social media and platforms to share work and help more people than ever before, teaching things like abuse isn't your fault or talking about suicide doesn't make it more likely.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Kindness and respect for all types of people. These are essential both personally and as a psychologist because people need to feel they can open up to you.
