What do you attribute your success to?
My success can be attributed to perseverance and resilience.
I have witnessed the decline of prominent establishments such as Henri Bendel, Lord & Taylor, and Barneys NYC. Despite these setbacks, I have maintained remarkable resilience. I am not apprehensive about approaching stores and expressing my need for employment. I do not possess an inflated ego; while I have an ego like everyone else, I am proactive in seeking opportunities. If I am unemployed or require assistance, I will visit 18 stores within a week. I will approach each individual I know from the past and inquire about their ability to provide support. I encourage others to overcome fear and embarrassment by simply showing up and actively seeking opportunities.
Life is cyclical, with periods of success and failure. This pattern will persist indefinitely. Additionally, I am highly sociable and proficient in multiple languages. I am a warm and approachable individual who is not afraid to ask questions. These attributes collectively contribute to my success.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most valuable career advice I have ever received is to extend grace to others. Take a moment to observe the situation and consider the possible circumstances that may have led to it. You cannot know for certain what happened before, during, or what will happen afterward. Try to offer grace and understanding. Of course, if someone is extremely disrespectful or aggressive, you should try to de-escalate the situation. If that does not work, you have done your best. Remember, this is a reflection of them, not of you. However, whenever possible, try to extend grace to others. This approach has been incredibly helpful in building relationships and navigating the complexities of the beauty industry.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
In my opinion, young women entering this industry should prioritize their personal development. Develop your projects discreetly, allowing your accomplishments to speak for themselves, and never hesitate to seek clarification. Observe diligently, discern your aspirations and limitations.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The most significant challenge in my industry is the prevalence of saturation and unprofessionalism within the hiring process, particularly in New York City. Companies frequently anticipate multiple roles without commensurate compensation, necessitating adaptability and perseverance. Concurrently, there are opportunities available for individuals who are willing to embrace emerging technologies, reinvent themselves, and maintain flexibility.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that hold the utmost significance for me are fairness, empathy, and integrity. I firmly believe in treating every individual with impartiality, even when I may not concur with their opinions. I am resolute in upholding my principles and refusing to compromise on what aligns with my moral compass. Additionally, assisting those in need is a cornerstone of my life. I engage in regular volunteer work at food banks and am deeply committed to ensuring that no one experiences hunger or homelessness. Equally important are my personal relationships, including my chosen family, friends, and pets. These relationships serve as constant reminders to prioritize and nurture the individuals who provide me with support and companionship.
