Ten minutes with Renee
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to living a life of purpose, embracing lifelong learning, and believing that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Throughout my career as an educator, coach, school leader, and workforce development professional, I have remained committed to serving others with excellence, integrity, and compassion. I have learned that lasting success is never accidental—it is built through preparation, discipline, resilience, and a willingness to help others discover their own potential.
One of the greatest lessons basketball taught me is that talent may open a door, but character, education, and perseverance determine how far you go. Those principles have guided every stage of my journey—from the classroom and the basketball court to school leadership, workforce development, entrepreneurship, and public speaking.
Beyond my professional accomplishments, I consider my greatest success to be raising my two daughters, who have grown into accomplished, compassionate women—one pursuing a career in law and the other serving as a nurse practitioner. Their lives remind me that true success is measured not only by personal achievements, but by the lives we influence, the opportunities we create for others, and the legacy we leave behind.
Today, that legacy is reflected in one guiding belief that shapes everything I do:
Every Student Deserves a Blueprint.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was simple: "Always be prepared before the opportunity arrives."
That advice has guided every chapter of my life—from competing as a student-athlete and professional basketball player to serving as a teacher, coach, high school principal, workforce development leader, entrepreneur, and transformational speaker. I have learned that success is rarely about being the most talented person in the room. It is about consistently preparing, continuing to learn, and being ready when the next opportunity presents itself.
Preparation builds confidence. Confidence inspires action. Action creates opportunity.
Today, I encourage every student and professional I mentor to invest in themselves before they think they are ready. Read the book. Develop the skill. Build the relationship. Practice the presentation. Earn the certification. The opportunities we dream about often come to those who have quietly prepared long before anyone was watching.
Preparation is where confidence begins, and confidence is where purpose comes to life.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to be intentional about designing your future rather than waiting for it to happen. Develop a clear vision for where you want to go, create a plan to get there, and commit to learning every step of the way.
Seek out mentors and coaches who
will challenge you, provide honest feedback, and encourage you to grow beyond
your comfort zone. The right mentor doesn't simply celebrate your
strengths—they help you recognize your blind spots, expand your perspective, and
prepare you for opportunities you may not yet see.
Don't be afraid to embrace change or step outside your comfort zone. Growth often begins the moment you are willing to take on a new challenge, learn a new skill, or pursue a path that stretches your potential.
Most importantly, remember that your greatest investment is in yourself. Continue learning, lead with integrity, serve others with excellence, and never lose sight of your purpose. Success is not something you hope for—it is something you intentionally build, one decision at a time.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges facing education and workforce development today is that too many young people are expected to make life-changing decisions without first being given a clear roadmap for success. Students are graduating into a rapidly changing world shaped by artificial intelligence, emerging careers, and evolving workforce demands, yet many still lack the guidance needed to connect their education with meaningful career opportunities.
At the same time, I believe this challenge presents one of our greatest opportunities. Schools, businesses, and communities have an unprecedented opportunity to work together to better prepare students—not only academically but also with the leadership, communication, critical thinking, adaptability, and career readiness skills that today's employers value.
I also believe we must move beyond preparing students simply to graduate. Our responsibility is to prepare them to thrive. That means helping every young person discover purpose, develop a plan, and understand that success is built through intentional preparation, lifelong learning, and meaningful relationships.
When we equip students with both practical skills and a clear vision for their future, we don't just prepare them for their first job—we prepare them for a lifetime of growth, contribution, and opportunity. That's why I believe every student deserves more than an education—they deserve a Blueprint.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my professional and personal life are purpose, integrity, preparation, service, lifelong learning, and legacy.
I believe every decision should
be grounded in purpose. When we understand our "why," we make better
choices, overcome challenges with greater resilience, and remain focused on
making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Integrity is equally important.
Whether I am speaking to students, partnering with educators, working with
employers, or spending time with my family, I strive to lead with honesty,
respect, and consistency. I believe that trust is earned through our daily
actions, not simply our words.
Preparation has been a guiding
principle throughout my life. Basketball taught me that confidence is built
through preparation, and that lesson has shaped my approach to education,
leadership, and workforce development. I encourage every student and professional
I mentor to prepare for opportunities before they arrive.
Finally, I believe success is
most meaningful when it is shared through service. Helping others discover
their potential, achieve their goals, and create brighter futures is what gives
my work purpose. At the end of the day, I hope my legacy is not measured by
titles or accomplishments, but by the lives I have positively influenced and
the opportunities I have helped create.
That philosophy is reflected in
the mission that guides my work each day:
Every Student Deserves a Blueprint.
