Her Story

About Reyshell

Reyshell Bates serves as a probation officer in the criminal justice field, where she has worked for about 2 years. She supervises over 151 individuals, referring defendants to treatment for substance abuse, alcohol, or anger issues, coordinating classes, conducting evaluations and testing, assisting with GEDs, performing check-ins, and using the Texas Risk Assessment to develop case plans. Bates earned her associate's and bachelor's degrees from American Intercontinental University after deciding to study criminal justice, motivated by the loss of her mother to domestic violence. She is currently pursuing a Master's of Legal Studies at Texas A&M University, with an expected graduation in May 2027 and a concentration in Human Resources and Employment Law. Prior to her current role, she worked as a claims adjuster and as a private investigator for about a year, including on homicide cases in Houston. Bates attributes her drive to her children and her desire to help others through rehabilitation, while navigating professional challenges such as intimidation from colleagues with more tenure. She values inclusivity, diversity, and peace of mind in her professional life, and family, support, love, happiness, and putting God first in her personal life.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Reyshell

01What do you attribute your success to?

The death of my mom to domestic violence motivated me to enter this field. My kids also motivate me to finish my education and want more for them. I dropped out of college when I got pregnant with my daughter but went back in 2025 determined to finish my master's.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My sister who works high up in the hospital mentors me. The best advice is to recognize and be aware, be mindful, know how to handle yourself in a professional setting, stay alert, and navigate office politics professionally.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay aware, be alert, be cautious, pay attention to detail, go with your gut instinct, trust yourself, and be mindful of the people that you work around.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Intimidation from others due to my drive and determination. People with more tenure can feel intimidated by my skill set and mindset, making it challenging to navigate the environment.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In personal life: family, support, love, happiness, and God first. In professional life: inclusivity, diversity, and peace of mind.
