Her Story
About Rhasheina
Rhasheina Lassiter has dedicated 26 years to education, currently serving as a kindergarten teacher. She began her teaching career with Birmingham City Schools, where she taught kindergarten for five years before transitioning to middle school, instructing sixth through eighth grade students in reading and language arts for 13 years. She later joined the diocese of Catholic schools, where she has taught for the past 21 years, returning to her passion for kindergarten education. Lassiter earned a BA in Mass Communication from Miles College in 1999 and a BS in Early Childhood from the same college in 2003. Beyond the classroom, she works as a ghostwriter conducting food reviews for Alabama magazine, drawing on her background in journalism. She remains actively involved in her community through the Junior Imperial Light Club, a nonprofit debutante program for African American teens, where she supports young women as a spinster after participating as a debutante herself in 1994. Her aunt, a longtime teacher who retired as a principal, inspired her path into education.

Ten minutes with Rhasheina
01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be confident in what you're doing. Be you. My motto is 'why be you when I can be me?' Children need us and we need more teachers. Don't come into the profession because of the money. You gotta love it. You gotta have it in your heart.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Keeping teachers is a big challenge. People come in and work only a month or two then leave. Young people want to do social media and get rich off that instead.
