Her Story

About Richa

Richa Thakur is a Senior Product Manager at Microsoft, where she has spent nine years building innovative technology solutions after gaining more than 15 years of experience across the IT and product development landscape. Before transitioning into technology, Richa earned a degree in Architecture in India and began her career as a building architect, designing a wide range of projects, including residential properties, office spaces, warehouses, and the shell and interiors of a new Safeway location in the greater Seattle area. Her architectural background provided her with a strong foundation in problem-solving, design thinking, project management, and collaboration.

Richa began her technology career as a Quality Assurance Engineer at ARRIS, where she developed expertise in software testing, automation, and cross-functional collaboration. She later transitioned into product management at a startup on the East Coast, gaining valuable experience across the full product lifecycle, from requirements gathering and strategy development to execution and delivery. At Microsoft, she continues to leverage her technical expertise and leadership skills, working closely with engineering teams and driving customer success initiatives focused on Observability and Azure Monitor.

Beyond her professional achievements, Richa is deeply committed to community service and empowering others. She is the co-founder and Board Chair of Sammamish Independent, a nonprofit community newspaper in Sammamish, Washington, dedicated to fostering local journalism and training high school students in storytelling and reporting. She also volunteers with community meal programs supporting individuals undergoing medical treatments and mentors women entering the workforce, as well as college students through AnitaB.org. Richa attributes her success to the perseverance, dedication, and strong work ethic modeled by her parents and grandparents, along with maintaining a positive mindset, gratitude, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in both her career and community.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Richa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the values of perseverance, hard work, and consistency that were instilled in me by my parents and grandparents. I approach every opportunity and challenge with a positive mindset, gratitude, and a commitment to giving my best effort. I believe that our thoughts shape our reality, and by maintaining optimism, resilience, and dedication, I have been able to navigate my journey, embrace new experiences, and continue growing both personally and professionally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I have gained valuable career advice from every leader, colleague, and teammate I have had the opportunity to work with throughout my journey. Rather than pointing to a single mentor, I believe each interaction has contributed to my growth by teaching me important lessons in discipline, collaboration, kindness, and perseverance. I especially value leaders who empower others to succeed and believe that one of the most impactful qualities a professional can have is the ability and willingness to help others shine. This mindset has shaped my own leadership approach and continues to guide how I mentor, collaborate, and support the teams I work with.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering the technology industry to continuously reinvent themselves, stay curious, and remain committed to learning and innovation. The industry is constantly evolving, so it is important to stay informed about emerging trends, build new skills, and embrace opportunities for growth. I also believe in knowing your priorities and making intentional choices throughout your career journey. Even during times when other responsibilities may require more focus, try not to step away from your career for an extended period. Stay connected, continue learning, and keep moving forward. Remaining engaged in the workforce not only supports financial independence but also builds confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of personal accomplishment.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my career was transitioning from architecture, a profession I truly enjoyed, into the technology industry during a period of economic uncertainty. This decision required me to step outside my comfort zone, learn an entirely new field, and adapt while balancing the responsibilities of raising a young family. Another transformative experience was becoming a cancer survivor, which tested my resilience as I continued working full-time while undergoing treatment and caring for my two young children. With the support of my family, I gained a deeper appreciation for life, strengthened my empathy, and became even more determined to create meaningful impact both professionally and personally. These experiences have shaped my ability to embrace change, continuously learn, and view challenges as opportunities for growth. I believe the future of technology lies in combining innovation, technical excellence, collaboration, and empathy to create solutions that positively impact people and communities.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are perseverance, hard work, consistency, gratitude, and maintaining a positive attitude. I believe in giving my full commitment and bringing my best effort to everything I do, whether I am focused on my career, supporting my family, or contributing to my community. Approaching each opportunity with dedication, appreciation, and a willingness to go above and beyond allows me to continue growing, overcome challenges, and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those around me.
