Her Interview

Ten minutes with Richelle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I didn't grow up with a lot of money. My mom always pushed me to not rely on anyone but yourself, while still beig humble enough to ask for help when its needed. From a really young age, I was very independent. I pushed myself. I'm a people person inspired by relationships. It's my mentality and my independence that pushes me to be where I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't focus too much on the results. Focus on the process and the results will come.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

In the industrial world in construction it's very male-driven, very male-dominant. You always have a seat at the table and you just have to make that seat and you can't be afraid. Don't let being a female intimidate you. You go on meetings or work with all men and it can be tough and intimidating. Find the confidence which will come over time to know that you do have a seat at the table.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Not being taken seriously on the technical side. Being in a super male-dominated field can be a challenge, and it can be tough to build relationships when you dont have a lot in common with some people. I've learned to just be myself. Opportunity includes room to grow into construction project management or even a technician if I wanted to; the company will put me through courses to learn whatever I want to do in the company. There's a ton of opportunity to move into different roles.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Relationships are a big one. Loyalty and knowing people can depend on me, but also making sure that I take care of me first. If I cant take care of myself and show up for me, how can I show up for others in my work or personal life? Being there for people, people can depend on me. Confidence isn't something everyone's born with, you gotta get that over time. Not this confident 10 years ago. Health and fitness are important to me as well.
