Her Interview
Ten minutes with Rika
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the resilience I developed through overcoming difficult life experiences and challenges. Facing hardships, including abusive relationships and a difficult childhood, taught me courage, perseverance, and the importance of continuing forward. I am also deeply grateful for the encouragement and support of my children, who have inspired me to pursue my ideas and believe in my abilities.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I have not received one specific piece of career advice that stands out above the rest. Much of my growth came through hands-on experience and learning opportunities throughout my career. While working for Marla Gibbs, I received valuable management training across different departments, which helped me develop leadership skills, adaptability, and a broader understanding of business operations.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to never give up and continue moving forward one step at a time. Maintain a positive attitude, take action toward your goals, and focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on challenges. Believe in your ideas and have the courage to pursue them.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges I face is navigating product development as a non-IT professional while continuing to build my technical knowledge. I also recognize the challenges women, particularly women of color, may experience when entering innovative and technology-driven fields.
At the same time, there are significant opportunities to use artificial intelligence and cloud security to simplify document management, improve workflow efficiency, and create practical solutions for homes and organizations. There are also opportunities to address environmental concerns through sustainable waste-management initiatives.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are resilience, perseverance, positivity, service, and responsibility. I believe in being a strong source of support for my children, contributing positively to my community, helping others, caring for elders, and creating solutions that have a meaningful impact on people and the environment.
