Her Story
About Ritika
I'm currently a college student at Texas A&M University in College Station, about to graduate this May with a major in environmental geoscience. My typical day starts with my classes, labs, and things like that. I also try to make sure that I go to the gym and keep myself healthy, as well as make sure I eat healthy. I'm always working on my own professional skills and industry skills as well - sometimes I take courses, and then I attend extra seminars and lectures and things like that. One of my most notable achievements is joining the Gear Lab at Texas A&M, which is a lab that's very focused on GIS and its intersection with AI and disaster resilience, like natural disasters and stuff. I'm really excited for all of the post-graduation opportunities that I could explore, like graduate school, doing my thesis for a master's, or getting a full-time job somewhere in a city that I really want to live in.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ritika
01What do you attribute your success to?
I honestly attribute my success to my friends and my family. There was a time where I was surrounded by the wrong people, and it definitely took a toll on my grades and my life in general. But after meeting the right people and spending more time with my family and understanding what really were my values and what I wanted to do in life, I managed to pick myself back up and get all these new opportunities for me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think the best career advice that I've ever received is to just go for it. Just going for it, even if you think that you may not be qualified, or if you'd like to not doubt yourself. Because the most unexpected opportunities will come up if you try.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It might feel really scary at first, because there's just gonna be so many things coming at you all at once. But there's so many organizations and just generally other women in your class that are probably going through the same thing, and everyone's really supportive.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Right now, I'm just making sure that I'm not overbooking myself. I have a really bad habit of trying to do everything at once, and so I'm trying to work on that a little more. I'm really excited for all of the post-graduation opportunities that I could explore, like graduate school, doing my thesis for a master's, or getting a full-time job somewhere in a city that I really want to live in.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say definitely discipline and determination. Those are the two biggest ones. And also, one of my other biggest values is making sure to have a good, supportive group of people around, because I think that is something that not a lot of people talk about, but it's definitely so helpful, because they can help influence you into becoming a better person.
