RoAnn Destito is a dedicated public servant with more than four decades of service to the State of New York. A Utica native who moved to Rome in 1985, she built a career focused on strengthening government operations and improving services for communities across the state.

Her public service began in 1981 and grew into a notable tenure in the New York State Assembly, where she represented her district for over 19 years. In 2011, RoAnn made history as the first woman to be nominated and unanimously approved by the New York State Senate to serve as Commissioner of the New York State Office of General Services (OGS). She served in this role for 10.5 years, leading statewide procurement, real estate services, design and construction, and key government operations.

Since retiring in 2021, RoAnn has remained active in community service through board roles and civic engagement, including her work with Nascentia Health and initiatives in the Mohawk Valley. Known for her integrity and commitment to public service, she continues to support projects that uplift communities and inspire future leaders.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my upbringing. The values I was raised with—hard work, humility, faith, and perseverance—shaped the way I show up in every part of my life. They taught me to stay grounded, remain grateful, and keep pushing forward no matter the obstacles.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is simple: work hard and be prepared. Those two principles have guided every step of my journey. Showing up with strong effort and readiness has opened opportunities, strengthened my confidence, and helped me deliver consistently in everything I do.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in my field right now is the ability to truly make a difference. There is a growing need for meaningful impact, whether through stronger support, better systems, or more intentional collaboration. I see this as both a responsibility and an opportunity to contribute to real, lasting change.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me, both in my work and in my personal life, are honesty and integrity. I believe in being truthful, transparent, and doing what’s right—even when no one is watching. These principles guide my decisions, shape my relationships, and help me build trust with the people I serve.
