Her Story
About Robbin
I've been in the marine industry for over 22 years, and it's been my first passion. It's been a hard journey, a long journey, but I've learned a whole lot along the way. As a parts manager or office manager, my key responsibility is making sure the customer is happy at all times possible. I know that's a challenge of its own, but I wouldn't have it any other way - I love a challenge because it keeps the brain active and keeps you on your toes. I focus on making sure everybody is working together and trying to solve problems or make the day better, just being proactive. The best achievement is learning the marine industry and how it works, taking that ride which is definitely a journey with surprises along the way. It's a fun, phenomenal career and I absolutely love it. What I love most about my role is the people - I enjoy people, I like to talk to people, make them laugh, and solve any issues that they may have. I learn a little bit about them so I'm more personable with them and understand their journey in life. As long as you're understanding and you listen, you would be amazed at how much you accomplish and how far you get. Most of my education is self-taught - I did high school and graduated, and that's the furthest extent of schooling I have. I've learned a lot out on the streets and by listening to people talk and hearing what they have to say, which can be very beneficial.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Robbin
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think it's my strong will to learn. Since I'm on my own, you have to take every step possible to make it better. So I think my attitude in life has pursued me down this road and in this career to make a living and learn as much as I can. You have to take in all that you can - the brain is like that, you gotta take in all that you can.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Listen, just pay attention to what people say. Listen to what they're trying to tell you. It may not always be right, but I think if you've got a real good head on your shoulders, you're going to be able to figure out what they're trying to say and accomplish.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always have your brain wide open. Always be ready to listen and learn, because you are going to learn something new every day. As long as you've been in this industry, you think you've seen it all and you know it all, but that is not true. Every day is something new.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is that it's mostly a male-dominant career. The men being men, sometimes their heads get real big and think that a woman can't do this type of work, when in fact, absolutely they can. The more you have the will and the power, you're going to succeed.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values to make sure you have the best day possible, trying to make everybody happy, like I had mentioned before. If you can do that and achieve that, you've done very well for the day.
