Roberta Draughn is a dedicated higher education professional and advocate for student success, currently serving as the Director of Academic Support at Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina. In her role, she provides strategic leadership for academic support services, overseeing tutoring, advising, and coaching programs that foster student engagement and retention. With a particular focus on underserved and at-risk populations, Roberta implements data-informed strategies, manages departmental operations, and continuously works to enhance academic performance across the college.

In addition to her directorial duties, Roberta serves as an Assistant Coach for the women’s basketball program, where she provides mentorship, academic support, and development guidance for student-athletes. She leverages her organizational skills and commitment to accountability to create an environment where students can thrive both academically and athletically. Beyond athletics, she leads the BulldogsTHRIVE Pathway program, partnering with local schools to support AVID students and ensure access to resources that promote academic achievement and college readiness.

Roberta’s extensive experience in education also includes teaching English at Sallie B. Howard School and managing operations at West Corporation, demonstrating her ability to balance leadership, teaching, and program management. She holds a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Leadership from Barton College and a Teaching Licensure in Middle Grades Education, complementing her strong background in academic support with leadership and instructional expertise. Passionate about fostering equitable opportunities, Roberta is committed to helping students navigate successful and resilient academic pathways.

I attribute my success to strong time management, prioritization, and a commitment to student success across all the roles I hold, from Director of Academic Support to coaching and mentoring positions. Recognition like the Connection Award from Barton College reflects the impact of dedicating myself to both administrative responsibilities and direct student engagement.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to lead with integrity even when no one is watching. Titles and roles can change, but your character is what builds lasting trust and influence. That mindset has guided every decision I’ve made.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to always uphold your purpose and integrity, lead with compassion, speak up confidently, and recognize that serving others is a powerful path to both professional and personal growth.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are faith, my daughter, and a deep commitment to helping students realize their potential—watching them overcome challenges and grow into confident, capable adults fuels my passion every day.
