About Robin
Robin R. Hughes is the founder and owner of R. Hughes & Associates, a comprehensive human resources consulting firm established in 2019. With more than 15 years of experience in human resources, labor relations, contract compliance, diversity and inclusion, organizational development, and Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Hughes provides strategic guidance to entrepreneurs, corporations, and construction organizations. Her multidisciplinary expertise enables her to help clients strengthen HR practices, navigate compliance requirements, develop diversity programs, review contracts, and build effective people strategies aligned with organizational goals.
Hughes has distinguished herself through her work on major initiatives, including the $257 million FedEx Forum project in Memphis, where she developed minority participation and community outreach programs that continue to serve as models for expanding opportunities for minority-, women-, and disadvantaged-owned businesses. Her professional credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, master’s degrees in Human Resource Management and Industrial-Organizational Psychology, two honorary doctorates, and doctoral studies in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, for which she is preparing for her oral defense. She is also OSHA 30-hour certified, a certified arbitrator through the National Council of Better Business Bureaus, and a specially licensed paralegal with experience supporting legal and compliance matters.
In addition to her consulting work, Hughes has served as a professor and curriculum developer in human resources and Industrial-Organizational Psychology at several universities. Her accomplishments have earned her recognition including the Creative Visionary Award and honors featured in McGraw-Hill South Central Construction Magazine for her innovative community outreach and minority participation initiatives. Throughout her career, Hughes has remained committed to authentic relationships, people-centered leadership, professional integrity, and regulatory compliance. Through R. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to recognizing opportunities when they arise and having the courage to pursue them. I discovered my niche unexpectedly while working thousands of feet above the ground on the FedEx Forum project, the largest construction project in Memphis history. I developed minority participation and community outreach programs that continue to be used today, and my efforts were recognized with awards for exceeding participation goals on the $257 million project.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to slow down, map out my priorities, and create a schedule that allows time for both productivity and self-care, whether that means taking a walk or a power nap. I’ve also learned the importance of persevering, staying true to who I am, and being unapologetically authentic. Most importantly, I believe in building genuine relationships rather than transactional ones, putting people first, and leading with empathy, respect, and authenticity.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I would give to young women entering my industry is to go for it because nothing is impossible. Do your research, seek out a mentor who can guide and support you, and never allow someone else to convince you that you cannot accomplish something. Just as importantly, do not limit yourself with self-doubt, because the moment you tell yourself you cannot do something, you have already given up. Believe in your abilities, remain persistent, and be confident in pursuing your goals.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in my field is helping entrepreneurs understand the importance of listening, staying focused, and following the necessary compliance requirements. Many entrepreneurs are eager to pursue their vision and may not initially recognize the importance of certain legal and financial safeguards. I work to educate and guide them by explaining the potential risks, such as commingling personal and business funds, maintaining accurate ledgers, and overlooking other essential compliance measures. My goal is to help entrepreneurs understand that these practices are not simply formalities but critical steps in protecting their businesses and positioning them for long-term success.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are relationships, integrity, and putting people first. I am deeply relational and believe in building genuine, meaningful connections rather than transactional relationships. I make it a priority to ensure people are supported and taken care of, and I am willing to speak up against toxic leadership and advocate for employees when necessary. I believe in doing the right thing, even when it is difficult, while also recognizing the importance of self-care and making time to recharge, even with a demanding schedule.
