About Romy

Romy Canche serves as a visiting professor specializing in the Spanish language at Texas State University. With more than a decade of experience in education, she brings a deep commitment to teaching Latin American literature and fostering cross-cultural understanding among her students. Canche earned her bachelor's degree in Latin American studies in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, followed by a master's degree in Spanish language from the University of Texas at El Paso and a PhD in Literary and Cultural Studies of Latin America. In her role, she organizes curricula that connect language skills to professional applications and community engagement, always considering the diverse needs of student groups. She strives to act as both an instructor and a mentor, guiding students inside and outside the classroom to become better communicators and community members. Previously recognized by the Provost Office at the University of Arizona for her mentoring efforts, Canche continues to prioritize accessibility and support for her students as they develop their language abilities.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To be a professor is a big responsibility. Understand the different necessities of students in different groups. Be a guide and mentor inside and outside the classroom, not only to teach but to help students understand the role of language and become better people for the community.
