Her Story

About Ronda

Ronda Ellison has worked in the human services field since she was young, primarily with the intellectual and developmental disabilities population. She began her career as a direct support staff in residential settings while in high school and college. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she continued in residential roles before advancing to a skills trainer leadership position at the Center for Discovery upon earning her first master's degree. She then pursued a second master's in mental health counseling and worked as a mental health counselor for a year following COVID, specializing in trauma-informed therapy and intellectual disabilities. Ronda later moved to New York to serve as a behavior intervention specialist for individuals with intellectual disabilities. She joined her current agency as a START Coordinator and advanced to clinical team lead supervisor and then Clinical Director. She is currently pursuing a PhD in developmental psychology with the goal of becoming a professor at a local university. Ronda attributes her success to strong personal supports, including family and mentors such as Dr. McNair, Maya, and Dr. Rose Haslett, and advises maintaining professionalism and focus on one's dreams.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ronda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the very strong supports that I have. Even though I am a single mother, I do have a boyfriend who has supported me over the last several months to be the best person that I am and to continue going. Alongside him are those really influential women like Maya and Dr. Haslett, and I still talk to that undergrad professor Dr. McNair. I also have my brother and my mom to support me through all of my dreams. My brother told me a quote years ago that I actually got a tattoo of: keep your dreams alive.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just maintain professionalism and keep your eyes on your dreams and your prize, and it will all come to fruition over time. Maintain the focus of your passion and it will come for you. It might not happen as fast as you might want it to, but it will come, so keep going.
