Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I would give a shout out to my mom. Regardless of what our situation was, she always worked. She never stopped working. I feel like if you want something, when you see something in life, you have to continue to work for it. So I would attribute my success to my mom and her work ethic.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I recently received was from Hari Kumar, the managing director at PWC. He talked to me about thinking beyond bootstrapping and doing things only at the level I can. He encouraged me to think outside of the box, and when I think about growth, to think about how I want to spend my days. I would sum that up as: think beyond your own visual, beyond what you can see with your own physical eye. There's a lot beyond that, so go beyond it. I also love what a comedian said about his dad working a safe job for years and then getting fired anyway. The lesson was: you choose your hard. It's going to be hard regardless, but you might as well choose the hard that makes you happy.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's hard, but it's worth it. I don't want people to think that just because you see somebody get a $30,000 check that it sounds easy. It took a lot of work to get there, but it's worth it. You choose your hard. It's going to be hard regardless of what you do, so you might as well choose the hard that makes you happy. Don't choose the safe route just because it feels secure, because even that can fall apart. Choose what you're passionate about.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is sometimes access to genuine information. When you get up to a certain level, everything feels like a sales pitch, but they don't necessarily give you the real information that you need. So trying to find and get access to real, genuine information is hard. The opportunity is being that person who provides that bridge to information for others.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The number one value for me is integrity, operating with a level of integrity regardless of how it's going to play out financially. Your word is more important than anything else. I think in this business culture that we live in, especially in the United States, integrity is something that I feel is lost. People are trying to find a shortcut, or get a leg up, or just get a little bit more off the top. So integrity is what matters most to me.
