Her Interview
Ten minutes with Roopa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my resilience. In my line of work, there are a lot of ups and downs. You have frustrations that can come up, like large programs that don't go the way that you would like. You're answerable to clients and have to deliver on promises. Sometimes situations happen out of your control. So you have to have resilience to face up to it, come up with a mitigation plan, and steer things your way.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received is that not everybody knows everything. Hone in on what you know and what you're good at, build on that. For weaknesses, try to develop yourself in that area and work with people who can compensate for that so you are a strong team overall.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You are going to face a lot of challenges, both personal and professional. Personally, you might have to put in time and persevere in the initial years, which could take away from personal time. Professionally, it is harder for women in this industry. Find your tribe within the company - people you can work with who can compensate for your weaknesses. Find advocates for yourself.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge right now is how to position yourself and your company in a market that is changing with AI. There's a lot of promise with AI, but it is very difficult to explain the tangible return on investment.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
High personal integrity and honesty are core values that I apply in both my personal and professional life. Kindness is also very important working with colleagues, family, and friends with kindness, especially at work with people from diverse backgrounds who may have overcome various challenges.
