Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rosalyn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of resilience and a genuine love for people. Working in public service since 2015 has taught me that success isn't just about hitting metrics; it’s about the relationships you build and the trust you earn from your community. I also owe a great deal to the mentors and the "sisters in spirit" around me who have provided encouragement and a sounding board for my ideas. Being awarded the "Spirit of the City" was a humbling reminder that when you pour your heart into your city, it pours back into you.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

"Don’t just manage the task; lead the people." Early in my career, I learned that while schedules and flyers are important, the real impact happens through the people you lead and serve. If you invest in your team and your community members, the "tasks" will naturally succeed because people feel empowered and invested in the mission.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Find your tribe and find your voice. Public assembly and recreation can be demanding, but having a support system of other women—a sisterhood—will keep you grounded. Don't be afraid to bring your unique perspective and creativity to the table. Whether you are designing a program or managing a facility, your personal touch is what will make the community feel at home. Most importantly, remember that leadership is a service; lead with a heart for others, and the recognition will follow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is staying ahead of the rapidly changing needs of a diverse community—ensuring that our programming remains relevant and accessible to everyone from our youth to our seniors. However, this creates a massive opportunity for innovation. Right now, we have the chance to use creative programming, like themed summer camps and specialized social events, to bridge generational gaps and rebuild the social fabric of our neighborhoods. Seeing the community center evolve from just a building into a true "hub" for connection is the most rewarding opportunity I see today.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity and community are my North Stars. In my work, I believe in being a reliable resource for the citizens of Shreveport, ensuring that every person who walks through our doors feels seen and valued. Personally, I value the spirit of "sisterhood"—the idea that we are stronger when we support one another and lift as we climb. Whether I'm managing a team or planning a gathering for my peers, I strive to lead with empathy and a commitment to excellence.
