Her Story

About Rose

I discovered computer programming when I was in second grade after finding a book on BASIC programming language that my dad was using. I thought, 'this is perfect for my brain.' I was lucky to be in Bangalore, India, which was one of the IT hubs even then, so we were introduced to those technologies very early on. In India at that time, computer programming was considered a good profession for women because you were sitting in an air-conditioned room at a desk doing work, and women had a good aptitude for math and science. I started my career teaching computer programming after graduation, then worked as a programmer. I moved to Oman where I worked in law firms and oil and gas companies in administrative and IT roles, always using my IT knowledge. In 2004, I immigrated to the USA and started working in New York before moving to New Jersey. I've been working in healthcare since 2008 and currently work as a project manager at a hospital, leading about 5 projects toward a big implementation. My approach is as a servant leader - I believe in creating a collaborative atmosphere where the team can excel. I don't try to make people do work; it has to be collaborative and inspired. I work with experienced, talented people, and I take a step back to let them lead in their areas of expertise. My role is to help them hit the milestones we've agreed on together, remove roadblocks, and create an enabling environment. When it comes down to it, project management is people handling, and I do it consciously and intentionally.

Ten minutes with Rose

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the feedback I get from people that I am a good person to work with. That gives me a lot of confidence. My methods are conscious methods - it's not something that just comes easily. I have to consciously, intentionally approach my work as a servant leader and create a collaborative environment. People have said, and I get this feedback from my manager, that my approach is having a good impact. That's a very good feedback I get, and I feel that is a good achievement for me. It's about being intentional in how I handle people and create an atmosphere where the team can excel.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values to me are collaboration, service, and being a change agent. I believe in servant leadership - I don't try to make people do work, it has to always be collaborative and inspired. I take a step back and remind myself that my team members are the ones who have to lead in their areas, because they have the job because they have something to offer. My outlook is that they are able to hit the milestones that we have agreed on together, and it has to be an agreement. I'm an enabler, creating an atmosphere for the team to excel. I also believe in thinking out of the box and not going according to the norm - I may be sometimes a disruptor, but I do it with respect and with the understanding that change is good. I'm naturally not afraid of change, and I guess that's why I'm thriving in this profession as a change agent.
