Her Story

About Roxanne

I retired as professor emeritus in 2017 from the University of Tennessee after 30 years there, and 5 years prior at the University of Texas. I taught advertising and communication courses, with my PhD in communication. My research centered on depictions of women and minorities in advertising and mass communication, including cross-cultural studies like Korean women in magazines. I co-authored three books and presented papers in 13 countries. Since retiring, I have done volunteer work with organizations like Planned Parenthood and a local museum in St. Augustine.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You just have to keep growing and keep moving. If something doesn't work, try something else. Really work on maintaining your self-confidence because there can be a lot of rejection in a professor's job like submitting articles for review.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you can find someone or something that inspires you. I was really blessed to have mentors who supported me 1000 percent.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The elimination of DEI is concerning because what's going on in the country right now I find very scary. It feels like going backwards, and the focus of our careers on cultural depictions of women and minorities is now persona non grata.
