About Ruby
Ruby De La Torre is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology with more than a decade of advanced practice nursing experience. She has been providing comprehensive dermatologic care since 2017 and currently practices at Illinois Dermatology Institute, where she treats patients of all ages for a wide range of skin conditions while also offering select cosmetic dermatology services. Known for her compassionate, patient-centered approach, she is dedicated to improving skin health and enhancing quality of life for the diverse communities she serves. Ruby's journey into healthcare is one of perseverance, determination, and purpose. As a single mother, she returned from Mexico to pursue her education after working in factories, determined to create new opportunities for her family. While working full-time, she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential, completed her associate degree in nursing, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and ultimately received a Master of Science in Family Practice Nursing from Olivet Nazarene University in 2015. Her experience serving as a medical interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients inspired her to become a nurse practitioner, allowing her to bridge language barriers and provide culturally competent, accessible care. Throughout her career, Ruby has remained committed to serving others both locally and internationally. Fluent in the needs of diverse patient populations, she is passionate about building trusting relationships and ensuring every patient feels heard and understood. Her dedication to service extends beyond her clinical practice, most recently participating in a medical mission to Honduras alongside her daughter and niece where she provided much-needed healthcare to underserved communities. Guided by resilience, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to learning, Ruby continues to make a meaningful impact through exceptional patient care and community service.

01What do you attribute your success to?
Putting God first, perseverance and not giving up, and family support. My mother and siblings helped with childcare while I worked and studied full-time.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up. Follow your passion despite adversities. Schooling is difficult but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Always stay humble.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Cost of degrees is going up, making it hard to get education. Decreasing financial aid concerns may deter young people from medical fields due to high student debt.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Faith, family, integrity, empathy, respect. Having empathy for patients from diverse backgrounds and educating them thoroughly.
