Dr. Ruhina Najem, M.D., Ph.D. is an accomplished academic leader and educator with over two decades of experience in healthcare education, program management, and curriculum development. Currently serving as a faculty member at both Rider University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, Dr. Najem has built a distinguished career rooted in academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. Her professional journey spans leadership roles including Dean of Academic Affairs at Eastern International College, where she oversaw curriculum design, accreditation processes, and faculty development initiatives.

Dr. Najem’s academic foundation is as impressive as her leadership record. She earned her Ph.D. in Health Care Administration from Walden University, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA, and later obtained a Certificate in Clinical Project Management from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her background as both a medical doctor and a scholar uniquely positions her at the intersection of clinical practice, research, and higher education. What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my journey from Afghanistan to the United States—a path that began with a passion for medicine but transformed into a deep love for teaching and helping students learn, culminating in earning my Ph.D. and building a fulfilling career in education.

The best career advice I’ve ever received was to pursue my Ph.D., a decision that opened doors to new opportunities and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to believe that anything is possible—if I could come from another country and build a career from nothing, so can you; never underestimate your strength, resilience, and ability to inspire others.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are family and balance—I find joy and grounding in spending time with loved ones and reconnecting with nature through hiking.
