Her Story
About Ruiyu
I have been working in tech and AI with more than 8 years of experience, specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning. I work at Facebook where I focus on improving Facebook Marketplace through machine learning models and large language models. My daily work involves training and evaluating models to see if there are performance improvements, reading research papers to get ideas and inspiration on how to design algorithms, and implementing those algorithms to verify whether they work well. I conduct both online and offline testing, interacting with real users to improve their experience, satisfaction, and engagement with the products I support. My most notable achievement has been delivering an innovative model architecture that launched through Facebook Marketplace, which helps recommend products to users more accurately and provides more personalized recommendations. This has significantly increased user engagement and satisfaction. I'm passionate about the problem-solving process in coding and programming, and I feel very rewarded when I solve a problem. My goal is to further (1) increase he volume of sales and the returns of local, small businesses, and (2) create more jobs nationwide through the ecosystem of buyers and sellers I advanced.

Ten minutes with Ruiyu
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work and dedication. First, I always believe I can just make it. Whenever I have a goal, have a project, or need to finish some hard problems, I always believe I can achieve that. I don't know where the confidence comes from, but I always believe I can do it, so I put a lot of time and effort in achieving it. I'm very self-disciplined every day. It's transformed from a habit or a routine that you get used to that loop, and the loop is running faster and faster, and you are getting better and better.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to always be prepared when there is a chance. You need to always be prepared so that you can just go for it when it comes.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think this is a great time to enter the field and become part of the momentum around building AI. AI is advancing incredibly quickly, and people working in this field have a rare opportunity to shape technologies that could fundamentally change the world. There is still so much left to explore and contribute, and I believe we have the opportunity to help push AI closer to genuine human-level intelligence.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in my field right now is how we can make models more capable of human intelligence. The field is moving really, really fast, so I think everyone wants to catch up, but it's not easy to catch up. It's challenging for you to catch up, to train every day, and beyond that, you need to think about how you can make the crucial improvements, make it more really capable of human intelligence. In terms of how AI is impacting the field, I think AI is mostly helping. It helps us in our daily work productivity. It actually takes many junior-level coding tasks and helps a lot of execution. By doing this, it frees us a lot of time to think about what is the best direction to move forward, to think about how we should design a system, how we should plan everything. It gives us more time to think about something that requires more human intelligence.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are being careful as I move forward and never giving up. I believe in perseverance and keeping going no matter what challenges I face.
