About Ruth
Ruth Blake, PhD, is a professor and scientist at Yale University, where she has served on the faculty for 26 years. A marine biogeochemist with approximately 35 years of experience studying geochemistry and geology, she conducts research at the intersection of Earth and life sciences. Her areas of expertise include stable isotope geochemistry, geomicrobiology, marine biogeochemistry, astrobiology, and the study of bacteria living deep within the ocean floor and hydrothermal vent environments. Her work also explores the coevolution of Earth and life and the development of chemical tools that may help identify evidence of life on Mars.
Blake earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Geochemistry from the University of Michigan, where she was recognized as a Distinguished Dissertation Awardee. Throughout her career, she has combined scientific research and teaching with ocean exploration and educational outreach. She serves on the Ocean Exploration and Advisory Working Group and has participated in outreach initiatives involving Tall Ships, Ocean Classroom, the Amistad Freedom Schooner, and the exploration vessel Nautilus. She also leads STEM outreach efforts in New Haven and has participated in programs supporting parents and students in Connecticut and Boston, including the Ethnic Online STEM Foundation and STEM 101 for Parents workshops.
Blake's contributions to science, education, and outreach have been recognized through honors including induction into the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame, recognition associated with the naming of the species *Blake Bacterota*, an Alvin Dive Certificate, and recognition in the HistoryMakers National Archive. She attributes her success to her passion for science, curiosity, and the support and encouragement of her parents to pursue a strong education. She encourages young women entering science to volunteer, find great mentors, and pursue their goals with passion and dedication. Beyond her academic and scientific work, she is also involved in community health and wellness education and entrepreneurial activities.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my passion for what I do and my natural curiosity. I have always been driven to learn, explore, and better understand the world around me. I also credit my parents for always making me feel secure while encouraging me to pursue the best education possible. Their support and encouragement gave me a strong foundation for pursuing my scientific interests and professional goals.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
There are many opportunities available to young women entering science and related fields. I encourage them to volunteer, seek out great mentors, and take advantage of opportunities to learn and gain experience. Most importantly, if they are passionate about what they do and willing to work hard, I encourage them to go for it and pursue their goals.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are being authentic to myself and honoring the work and commitments I take on. I believe in staying true to who I am while following through on my responsibilities and maintaining a strong commitment to the work and people I serve.
