About Ruth
Ruth Johnson has worked in cybercrime investigations since 2013. She entered the field after responding to a personal assistant advertisement that turned out to be a scam attempt, which motivated her to help prevent similar incidents for others. Johnson shares information about scams on LinkedIn, works with agencies such as the Canadian Border Patrol, the FBI, and law enforcement throughout the United States, and monitors Bitcoin machines in Arizona convenience stores to intervene with potential victims. She has taken courses on cybercrime and Bitcoin conversion processes. Johnson conducts public speaking engagements at the Aquinas Club in Arizona and for 55 and older communities, and she recently connected with a police fraud department to collaborate on programs. She faced a challenge when an opportunity to present on sextortion of youth at a teachers convention in Tucson was withdrawn because she refused to change the title. Johnson attributes her success to life and experiences and emphasizes values centered on helping people avoid financial and emotional destruction by scammers. She advises staying well connected without burning bridges and widening networks for future needs.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to life and experiences.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Try to educate yourself. Just stay aware of your surroundings. Any text or phone call you get that doesn't look right, contact the police or the institution to verify.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Stay well connected. Don't burn any bridges because you don't know who you may need in the future. Build bonds with your connections and widen your network because you may need them.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Opportunity to present on sextortion of youth at a teachers convention in Tucson but faced challenge when organizers wanted to change the title; they wouldn't let me present because I wouldn't change it.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Making myself feel good that I've been able to help someone. Helping people so they don't get destroyed financially and emotionally by scammers.
