About Ruth

Ruth X serves as CEO of All About Me, M-E-I, an LLC dedicated to motivation, elevation, and inspiration, where she has worked as a motivational speaker since 2019. After retiring in January from a 30-year career at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, she transitioned her lifelong passion for motivational speaking into a business. She began at NASA as an optical materials physicist and concluded her tenure as Deputy Division Chief. Ruth earned her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1994, becoming the first female to graduate with that degree from the institution. She received her master's degree in 1997 and her PhD in physics from Alabama A&M University in 2000, making her the second African American female to earn a PhD in physics in Alabama. During her NASA career, she served as an NSAP investigation specialist covering seven regions and received awards for her work on mishaps. She is recognized as one of NASA's modern figures. Ruth is a member of the Society of Women Engineers, the National Society of Black Engineers, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, and Toastmasters. She attributes her success to her inner circle of family, friends, and co-workers, along with strong work ethics rooted in her disciplined upbringing. The best career advice she received was to never eliminate herself and to apply for any position for which she feels qualified.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Ruth

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from my inner circle of family, friends, and co-workers, along with my strong work ethics that started with the disciplined upbringing from my parents who taught focus and being different without giving up.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was from a former supervisor who told me to never eliminate myself. If I feel qualified for a position, just apply for it and don't think I don't deserve it or that they won't pick me because no woman has been in the field before.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell them to follow their passion. The money will come, and it doesn't seem like work when you're doing something you really love. That passion overrides any issues, making it easy and enjoyable.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is being consistent with speaking engagements, as they flow heavily around Women's Month or Black History Month but slow down afterward.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Good morals, being authentic by not trying to fit in but just being yourself, and dedication are the most important values to me.
