About Ruth
I am a public health data analyst, biomedical engineering researcher, and technology innovator with a strong commitment to using data, engineering, and artificial intelligence to address complex health and environmental challenges. I currently serve as a COVES Fellow at the Virginia Department of Health, a role I stepped into in May 2026, where I work within the Office of Health Equity to develop quantitative models examining geographic disparities in health outcomes across Virginia, with a focus on informing equitable, data-driven public health decision-making.
Prior to this role, I spent over four years at the Malawi University of Science and Technology in progressively responsible roles, including Staff Associate in Engineering, Design Studio Technician, and Research Assistant in the Bioacoustics Lab. As a Research Assistant, I developed an application to assist in automatic identification of bird species using principles of bioacoustics, machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. As Design Studio Technician and Staff Associate, I facilitated a conducive environment for prototype development using Computer-Aided Designs and electric circuitry fabrication. I also served as a USSD Developer at LUANAR-Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, where I worked on the Design of a Hypertension Patient Monitoring Information System, and as a Biomedical Engineering Consultant at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, where I provided technical design evaluation and feasibility assessment for an Oxygen Generator project.
Across my career in public health, engineering, and research, my work has been driven by a passion for using technology and data to solve real-world problems and improve health and well-being in underserved communities. Whether I am developing quantitative models for health equity, designing engineering prototypes, or building AI applications for biodiversity, I bring a multidisciplinary approach, strong analytical skills, and a dedication to making a positive impact through innovation and collaboration. I am proud of the work I have done throughout my career and excited to continue advancing health equity and data-driven decision-making through my work at the Virginia Department of Health.
