Her Interview

Ten minutes with Salimah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I believe that my success is based on the love I have in my heart, because you have to love what you do. If you don't love what you do, if someone doesn't pay you, or you know, I think that the things that you love to do, you do it regardless if you get paid or not. So you have to have that love in your heart to help drive you to continue. You have to be the love that gives you that foundation to get to the next place, because sometimes it's not easy. So you have to enjoy what you do, love what you do, love yourself in the process, and keep moving forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Take one day at a time. That's the best career advice I've I feel like it's even more relevant now than I Back then, because that's all we can do is just take one day at a time. And so that's what I do. And I started to pay attention to my time because I only have a certain amount of time during the day to do things. So when you make the best of your time and do what you love, then it's not work.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to get organized. Learn what you can regarding business, because One of the things that, I had, to learn the hard way is that it's not just enough to like to do music or You don't only want to write a book or only want to do things that is creative because that's a different part of your brain. You also have to learn about how to protect your investment, your intellectual property.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges is that, you know, even though what I do, a lot of people do what I do, actually. And it seems like, you know, with, social media, it's it's nice because you can be available to be seen on a lot of different platforms, but up seeing is that people, something to get popular and then everybody kind of jumps on that. Sometimes being original and different may not always catch the eye, but if you continue to just continue to stay focused and hone in on your craft, there'll be something that comes up one day that will help you reach a different level.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I believe that, you know, if you are a parent, family is important. You have to have your core because no matter how big you get in the world, you still need those trusted people that you can trust. You know, caring for yourself. One of the things that my grandmother that she's no longer with us, but she said to be good to yourself. So we have to be good to ourself and that is whatever way that we can do that, which is why one of the reasons I wanted to bring the book, you know, and introduce the book to the world because, you know, helping Manage through difficulties, because it's when you're going through transitions, or you may just not know where you want to be. You know, the book is a very good, resource to even write your own ideas down, because it asks some very thought-provoking questions to help you get down to it, almost like a therapist In a book.
