Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never giving up, no matter how challenging things get. My mentor, Carol Ali, the owner of the franchise I worked at for 15 years, showed me that you can be a hard businesswoman while still maintaining exceptional customer service and being personable with clients. She taught me, through her example, that you don't have to sacrifice one thing for another. You don't have to be cutthroat to make money, and you don't have to compromise on customer service to be profitable. Watching her conduct business in a way that balanced all of these elements without compromising any of them was incredibly motivating. She always spoke highly of my performance and gave me the award for being the most influential tax preparer at the company, which I was one of the first to receive. Even though I never directly told her how much of a mentor she was to me, I admired her from the sideline and learned so much from watching how she handled all the attacks and obstacles that came with being a business owner while never losing sight of what mattered most: taking care of the client.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never be afraid to ask questions. I think that's what holds a lot of people back. They're very hesitant about asking questions and finding out because they're afraid of how other people are going to respond. But here's the thing: people are either going to help you or they're not, and it's no loss if they don't help you. You're just in the same position you were at before you asked. But if you ask and they do help you, now you're a step further. So never be afraid to ask questions, never be afraid to find out and research. Sometimes that means asking many, many people. Some people will get frustrated, and some people will genuinely just help you. But no matter what the response is, don't take any of that personally. Always ask. Always ask for help. Always ask questions. And always be learning. Find a mentor, even if it's just someone you admire from the sideline like I did.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Taking care of the client and providing exceptional customer service is the most important value to me. I learned from my mentor that you can be very personable with people and still maintain a successful business and make money. I don't believe in the narrative that you always have to sacrifice one thing for another. If you want to focus on just the money, you don't have to lack customer service and personal relationships. And if you provide high-value customer service and you're personable while doing business, you don't have to get paid less. I witnessed that all of these things can be done in a very respectable way, and you can still reach all your goals on the same level without having to compromise any of them. That balance between being a good business owner, maintaining excellent customer service, and being personable with clients while facing all the challenges that come with running a business is what I strive for.
