Her Story
About Saliyah
I'm currently a marketing student at the University of North Florida with one year left to complete my degree. I also have a dual minor in digital marketing and analytics and leadership. For over a year now, I've been working in data administration for the admissions college at my university, which I really enjoy because it involves a lot of analytical work that aligns with my minor. I'm very passionate about sales - that passion was driven by my experience when I was really young doing modeling and being a brand ambassador for one of Oprah's ex-hairstylists. That experience helped me develop a love for products, selling things, and helping people create an interest in things they might want. I'm pretty familiar with Tableau, a visualization platform that allows marketers to make charts and visualize data. I've been fortunate to earn Dean's List recognition twice during my three years here at UNF, most recently this past spring, which I'm really proud of. Right now, I'm actively looking for an internship in sales, and I'm planning to join the American Marketing Association club and the sales club at my school next semester in the fall.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Saliyah
01What do you attribute your success to?
The key factor to my success has been staying organized. I have tons and tons of whiteboards, and I have planners, visual planners - I need those to help me stay on track with all of my tasks, most important tasks, and just all of that. I need it in front of me so I can see everything clearly and stay focused on what needs to be done.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice that I would give to anyone starting out, trying to figure out what they love, I would tell them to try out a vast majority of things and put yourself out there. Honestly, just try a vast majority of things, things that you might not think that you would like. That's really important because you can find love for things that you would really never realize that you had love for, and it's amazing. I didn't even know I was passionate about sales until a little bit over a year ago, and I was like, wow, I've been really good at this.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I just love just being able to use my full creativity, and just being able to express that creative bone I have in me. It's just so fun. I call myself a little bit of a hobbyist - I love coloring, I love gardening, I have a little herb garden on my balcony, and I love painting. I also like music, making music, and I try to find some work doing voice acting when I can. Being able to use my full creativity and express myself is what matters most to me.
