Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sallie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to staying curious and intentionally placing myself in uncomfortable environments. Throughout my career, I have purposefully explored different industries, roles, and experiences so that I could continue learning and develop a broader perspective.
My path from working in my family's entrepreneurial business to technology, communications, project management, and operations has given me diverse experiences that continue to shape how I approach my work. I believe that remaining curious and being willing to step outside of my comfort zone have been important contributors to my growth.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay curious and never become too comfortable. You do not learn by remaining comfortable, so I encourage the next generation to continually challenge themselves, seek new experiences, and remain open to learning.
I believe that putting yourself in unfamiliar environments can help you develop new skills, gain different perspectives, and discover opportunities you may not have encountered otherwise. Staying curious and continuing to push beyond your current limits can be an important part of building a meaningful career.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in communications today is figuring out how to reach people where they are, particularly when audiences are dealing with information overload and limited time. Communications need to become increasingly relevant, personalized, and easy to understand and consume.
I see an important opportunity in developing a deeper understanding of the audience's lifestyle, needs, and behaviors and using that knowledge to create more effective communications. It is also important to develop new ways of measuring effectiveness and understanding whether communications are actually reaching and engaging the intended audience.
I believe communications professionals should continue exploring and testing new approaches, even when there is a possibility of failure. Trying new methods, learning from what does not work, and using new metrics and technologies can help the field continue to evolve.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are a strong work ethic, curiosity, continuous learning, and pushing beyond my personal limits.
I believe it is important to remain curious rather than becoming complacent. A strong work ethic gives me the discipline to follow through, while curiosity encourages me to continue learning and exploring new possibilities. I also value challenging myself to move beyond what is familiar because growth often comes from experiences that push me outside my comfort zone.
