Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sally
01What do you attribute your success to?
I am a lifelong learner who is always trying to absorb as much information as possible. Right now I am taking notes on a meeting I missed yesterday because I want to learn everything I can. I am also very goal-oriented, focused on closing deals, expanding my network, and growing my wealth.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to listen more than you speak, to ask questions, and to be the listener. It is important to understand more about what the client needs instead of focusing on what you are trying to sell. Sometimes when you have all this information you want to share, you can spew it out on people.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young women to find a good mentor, someone that they can trust, that they can shadow and follow. Business development roles are a great way to start from the ground up by engaging with prospects through phone calls and emails, really understanding what your company is offering, and finding the right audience.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There are many growth opportunities that can start in entry level positions where you learn and grow. Business development roles can lead to becoming successful account executives if you are patient and work hard. Challenges include a lot of rejection and getting many no's, which requires grit to stick with it and not get discouraged. Just over the weekend I talked to 150 bankers and got 2 leads, but when you find the right people it is really rewarding.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Trust is a big one for me. Empathy is also very important. Faith and family round out the values that guide both my work and personal life.
