Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I think just being consistent and persistent has been key to my success. Having good communication skills is essential, and I've always believed in being transparent and straightforward with people. Developing rapport and having strong relationships has been the most important reason why I've been able to stick around for so long in this industry. I make it a point to help people feel comfortable during the lending process, which can be scary when you need money for something. People are asked for a tremendous amount of information, and I feel I have the ability to make them feel that I'm credible, that I'm helping them, and that they can trust me. I want them to understand the process and feel at ease. That's one of my strongest assets, and that's what I've liked best about banking - the lending side where I can really guide people through.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say you just have to have specific personality traits and skills to succeed in banking. Go for it, and be open-minded and flexible in your thinking. Be willing to network - that's so important. Be persistent, be consistent, and always have a smile ready. Watch your body language because that matters. Even though you need to have some knowledge of numbers and finance, and that is necessary, your people skills are going to be much more important. If you have very strong people skills, you should make it. You also have to be willing to do some selling - and I know that's a harsh word, but essentially most positions now have turned into sales positions because it's all about uncovering needs. You have to go out and get it yourself. Those days of just sitting in a branch and having people come in are long gone. You have to be willing to go into a room of people and start a conversation - you can't be afraid to speak up.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think there's lots of opportunity for a career in banking, but it's got its challenges and its struggles. There's a ton of opportunity on the lending side, on the management side, and on the operations side. It just takes a lot of patience, good time management, and people skills to be successful in all three of those categories. One of the good things about banking is that it offers great work-life balance. I was able to do ballet classes, Taekwondo classes, cheerleading, volleyball, and drive my daughter all over while still doing my job and my hours and all my extracurricular activities. Not all jobs in banking give you that flexibility, but there are a lot of them where you do have flexibility with your own hours. As long as you produce and you're closing loans and doing things, you can get out and take a client to lunch or run personal errands without any issue. The challenge is that you have to be open to selling and networking - the world has turned every job into a sales position. You have to go out and get it yourself. You can't be afraid to go into a room of people and start a conversation.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is most important to me. Integrity is essential - I believe strongly in having integrity and good morals in everything I do, both professionally and personally.
