Ten minutes with Sally

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think I've been fortunate to be in situations where I've had a very good support system. And I've been able to not only work but to do some things that I personally enjoy. And making wise choices, not always but mostly, for training and being driven to pursue a career that I have a great passion for.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Once working with foster kids, my supervisor said you are spending an hour a week with them listening to them helping them to feel that their life matters and if that's the most you're doing that has value.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's rewarding to find a way to be helpful to people. Sometimes it doesn't work but the energy that you put in still matters. And for young people that their lives matter and if they apply themselves they can accomplish what they set out to do.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

There are lots of opportunities because there's a huge increase in psychological despair and mental health issues. The challenge is access to people and bringing people on board and having people believe that counseling matters and that it is helpful.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity. Compassion. Consideration for others. Honesty.
