Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sally

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to timing, mentors that I had in my life, and the people around me. I am someone who can learn something from everyone and I am always curious about what somebody else is doing that makes them good at what they do. I grew up in China and came to this country when I was young, living with an American family on my own, adapting to new situations where everything is not a given.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Come on in! The world is your oyster. Do what you love. If you are passionate about something, you'll be very good at it. Don't sweat the small stuff. Be curious, and be brave. Find your people, your tribe, that is a mentor or colleague who can listen to you and help you through a difficult situation.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges come every day. I love a challenge. I protect my energy pretty carefully because as I get older, I realize that there's only so much that you can give and fix. What you really need to know is what are the ones that are important that will make a difference.
