About Samantha

She is a dedicated early childhood educator with over a decade of experience fostering the cognitive, social, and emotional development of young children in preschool and VPK settings. Currently serving as VPK Instructor at Alachua County Public Schools, she prepares weekly lesson plans, implements developmentally appropriate study programs, leads Parent-Teacher conferences, and supervises activities for up to 15 children. Prior to this role, she spent nearly eight years as an Early Childhood Preschool Teacher at Vanderbilt University, where she designed weekly child-led curriculums based on the Emergent concept, created and taught online preschool curriculum during the pandemic, and collaborated with co-teachers, floats, student workers, and other professionals on classroom structure and leadership. She represented Vanderbilt's childcare centers on the University Staff Advisory Council and served as a voice on the VCFC Curriculum Committee, reviewing research-based curriculum aligned with social-constructivism and the value of play. She also mentored a student in the Next Steps program and presented lectures on the role of early childhood education in child development. She additionally served as Youth Ministry Leader at Nashville First Seventh-Day Adventist Church, working with children from birth to 18 years old. She is recognized as a creative, compassionate, and innovative educator who is deeply committed to nurturing young minds and building strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samantha

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God foremost, coming out of my fear of being different, taking opportunities I didn't utilize when younger, striving to excel, and instilling value in myself and others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Always walk through doors that are open for you, never be afraid to try something unfamiliar, strive to improve yourself, reach higher, and encourage others to come along with you.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be ready for what's coming as textbooks don't prepare you for the classroom environment; come in with an open mind, assimilate to the situation, maintain a positive attitude even on tough days, always reach to improve yourself, try opportunities without fear, and keep trying.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include behaviors, workforce pay and compensation not matching responsibilities, lack of recognition for the importance of birth to age 5 education, and difficulty attracting qualified people due to environment and pay. Opportunities include joining associations like NAEYC for free training, networking, hands-on learning, attending conferences, and becoming mentors in advocacy.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being honest, open, accepting of others, having a character where people feel comfortable, sharing knowledge, and keeping God at the forefront as a spiritual person to reflect who He is in interactions.
